In “Nexus: A Brief History of Information Networks from the Stone Age to AI,” historian Yuval Noah Harari examines the power of information networks in shaping our shared human narratives and their impact on civilization and culture. I admire his ability to implicitly discuss polarity tensions in such sensible and accessible ways.
Additionally, it can be beneficial to explicitly highlight some of the critical polarities I noted in the margins of his insightful work, which I have summarized in Polarity Maps included at the end. Some Key Ideas:
Decision-making. AI has evolved from tools requiring human direction to systems capable of autonomous decision-making.This transformation positions AI as an independent agent rather than a mere tool, introducing an “alien” entity that increasingly makes choices without explicit human input. This shift alters the traditional human-tool dynamic, presenting a scenario of autonomous agents with growing influence—a situation humanity has not previously encountered.
Erosion of Human Trust: Human societies are built upon trust and shared narratives and because AI can generate content indistinguishable from what’s created by humans — trust at it very foundation is under threat. The potential to erode social cohesion as individuals struggle to discern between what’s real or fake is unlike anything we’ve encountered as a species.
AI Creates “Realities”: AI’s production and propagation of narratives that influence individual and collective human behavior allows it to shape societal beliefs and actions on a massive scale and and potentially without human oversight.
Containment Challenges: Previous technologies augmented human capabilities, but AI has the potential to surpass human intelligence as it acts autonomously. Many creators of AI have grave concerns about human ability to maintain control.
Human Overwhelm/Burnout: AI doesn’t need rest like we organic beings do — AI is on 24/7 and constantly learns and changes how we humans relate to one another. The pace of change itself could exhaust us if we don’t manage ourselves, and AI.
A few intriguing points:
Pgs 292-3. Numerous studies have revealed that computers themselves often have deep-seated biases of their own. While they are not biological entities, and while they lack consciousness, they do have something akin to a digital psyche and even a kind of inter-computer mythology. Them may well be racist, misogynist, homophobic, or anti-Semitic.
Pg. 297. …getting rid of algorithmic bias might be as difficult as ridding ourselves of our human biases. Once and algorithm has been trained, it takes a lot of time and effort to “untrain” it.
Pg. 401-2. If we’re so wise, why are we so self-destructive? We are at one and the same time both the smartest and the stupidest animals on earth….the fault isn’t with our nature but with our information networks.
Pg. 404. …commit ourselves to the hard and rather mundane work of building institutions with strong self-correcting mechanisms…the decisions we all make in the coming years will determine whether summoning this alien intelligence proves to be a terminal error or the beginning of a hopeful new chapter in the evolution of life.
A Few (of Many) Suggested Actions/Guardrails:
Implement Robust Regulation of AI and Algorithms: Strong regulatory frameworks to oversee AI development and deployment – including holding corporations accountable for their algorithms’ actions and suggests banning bots from human conversations unless they clearly identify themselves.
Self-Correcting Mechanisms/Democracy: Counteracting the potential misuse of AI is as important as building institutions equipped with robust self-correcting mechanisms.
Global Cooperation in AI Governance: The global nature of AI mandates a collective approach to prevent the concentration of power among a few tech giants or authoritarian regimes, ensuring that AI benefits humanity as a whole.
